Universal Service

Today, March 12, 2025, has been declared Universal Service Fund Day of Action by the National Telephone Cooperative Association. As we navigate the various challenges to the USF, I want to take a moment to highlight the critical role of the Universal Service Fund (USF) in our efforts to provide reliable and affordable services to our community.

The Universal Service Fund is a cornerstone of our nation’s communications policy. Established in 1996 by Congress, its goal is to ensure that all Americans, regardless of their location, have access to essential communications services. This fund is particularly vital for rural areas like ours, where the cost of providing service is very high. The USF helps in:

Bridging the Digital Divide: The USF helps to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas by offsetting the cost of telecommunications infrastructure in high-cost rural areas like ours. This ensures that our members have access to high-speed internet and other advanced services. Without USF support, our goal of bringing fiber connectivity to every member is in jeopardy.

Supporting Low-Income Households: Through programs like Lifeline, the USF provides discounts on phone and internet services for low-income households, ensuring that everyone in our community can stay connected, regardless of their financial situation.

Enhancing Public Services: The USF supports connectivity in our local schools, libraries, and healthcare facilities, enabling better services and resources for our community.

Promoting Economic Growth: By improving access to communications services, our Cooperative helps to attract businesses and create job opportunities in our area, fostering economic growth and development, and connecting our businesses to a global customer base.

As we look to the future, it is essential that we continue to advocate for the Universal Service Fund and its programs. Your support is crucial as we work together to ensure that our community remains connected and thrives in the digital age. I am sending letters in support of the USF to all four of our Idaho legislators. Feel free to visit their websites and share your story of why USF support and connectivity are important to you.

Thank you for your continued trust and support.
